, including billy joel, bruce springsteen and the man sitting here right now, jon bon jovi. some of the worst devastation happened in his hometown and his home state. on thursday he had a chance to go home and see the damage and talk to people who had lost just about everything. that couldn't have been easy, john. good morning. nice to see you. >> no, it was hard, to see your hometown devastated like this and people that i grew up with, my grammer school turned into a shelter. people's homes gone and we're now homeless, never intended to be homeless. hard working blue collar people. >> the town you grew up in and means so much to you. >> yeah. >> what do you think it will take to rebuild? >> well, i think a concerted effort by we, by the collective we. i think as americans we all come together in these times of need and all feel we're all new yorkers in these times of need. we have been through it before and other parts of our country feel if they support us, they know some day we'll be supporting them. people come together in this time. >> and the call came out, and you obviously jumped in r
. home of bruce springsteen. perhaps you know it. we shot some video earlier. we saw continuous signs of the storm pushing things around. a lot of sand moved inland. pieces of homes moved around. people are coming out to the ocean to see what sandy left behind. ocean front buildings here. completely ripped apart. the force of the ocean waves at high tide last night. plus the winds, pushed the dunes, the sand, the beaches. everything inland. we talked to a long time resident. here's what he had to say. >> it is probably the worst one i've ever seen. >> reporter: what's in your heart today as you look at the damage? >> it is kind of sad. my wife and i met here. she was a waitress in what used to be a restaurant and i lifeguarded herend it is, you know, but as our minister said sunday, you can replace buildings. you can replace boardwalks. you can't replace people. >> reporter: no, you cannot. but it will take long time and a lot of hard work to replace the buildings and the other damage here. we talked to residents who said these ocean front properties away from the beach here have wate

. >> reporter: well, good morning to you, jenna. and of course asbury park the home of rock 'n' roll and bruce springsteen but this is different rock 'n' roll happening here as sandy makes its way onshore to the south of here. right now this is the latest on sandy. 260 miles south/southeast of cape hatteras, north carolina. it's 395 miles east of new york city. 75-mile-per-hour winds, northeast moving at 13 miles per hour. tropical force winds extend out 520 miles from the center of the storm, and that's going to be the big problem. as this system comes onshore it is certainly going to leave its mark. officials up and down the east coast are warning residents to take sandy very seriously. >> folks, this could be bad, really bad. it could impact us in several ways and for a long period of time. >> reporter: high winds and torrential rain could mean power outages for days. residents of coastal new jersey are bracing for the worst. >> the worst part is going to be the blooding. >> reporter: crews are busy pushing sand and using it to fill bags in hopes it will provide a barricade. homeowners alon
